Modesty here, with a Behind the Songs featuring Richard Hyssong! We enjoyed getting to see the Hyssongs at NQC last month, and I am excited to bring you this interview today!
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
"It is an honor to be featured by Two Sisters'. I sing lead/ tenor with my family the Hyssongs (yes that really is our last name). People always ask about our name, it is a Dutch name.Along with singing, I also play the trombone and piano during our concerts. People still love the live instruments and you do not see a lot of brass played at a southern gospel concert. We have the honor and privilege to sing in over 250 places every year all throughout the United States and Canada. In the last few years our family has also been so blessed to have many top 10 Singing News charting singles. With more people knowing who we are, the crowds have grown. As a result, we are able to minister to a much larger audience. That is what we are all about ministering the gospel to a lost and dying world. This year marks our 20th year singing together as a family. Our goal has always been and will always be about telling people about Christ, and encourage Christians.Because I travel with my mom, Susan and dad, Dell, I am able to bring my family on the road with me. In 2005 I married Kelly, who I couldn't do this ministry without. She has been a vital part in our success and I love her so much. We have two children, Makayla 8 yrs and Richard 4yrs. It has been fun watching them grow, and pray that they will continue to follow the Lord.We have named our current tour "Faith and Family". It is obvious that we as a nation and world, have turned our back on God and have neglected our families. We want to encourage families not to give up, but make time for God and Family! In fact this year my wife and daughter come up on stage each night and sing "As For Me And My House". The song is taken from the Joshua 24:15. I cannot tell you the emotion that I feel getting to stand next to those two every night. Our son watches from his seat, but he keeps saying that he wants to sing with us someday too. Maybe that will be the next Hyssong group. Some interesting facts about me?? Well at the age of 15 I sang at Carnegie Hall in New York City. That was an experience that I will never forget.I love sports, and I am very competitive. Baseball and Basketball are my two favorite sports to play, however since I am on the road I have picked up golf. I won't tell you how good or bad I am, let's just say that I play in the woods a lot. LOL"
2. What is one of your current favorite songs? Can you tell us a little bit about it and why it's a favorite right now?
"My favorite song that our family sings would have to be "It Doesn't Get Better Than This". It was just released to radio, and I love it..My Favorite song right now from a different artist? Karen Peck and New River with "I am Blessed". I think that with so much heartache, and horrible things going on right now in our world we often forget how blessed we really are."
3. Do you have anything else you'd like to share with our readers?
"One thing that I have been telling everyone lately is this, DONT GIVE UP!! So many are wanting to quit. I am seeing a shortage of Pastors, singers, missionaries, sunday school teachers etc.. I know life is hard. Christians are not being treated well in many areas and it is really getting bad out there. God loves us and went all the way to the cross. As Bill Gaither wrote, The King Is Coming, and I believe it wont be very much longer. We are blessed to travel like I mentioned earlier to many different places. I look forward to meeting many new friends soon."
